Acupressure
Acupressure and Acupunture have been around for thousands of years. The basis of these techniques is the presmise that the body runs on energy. In the past twenty years this has become accepted in the West. Anyone who still doesn't believe it need only watch medical show's on TV. When someone has their heart stop, they are shocked with electrical voltage. A person is tested for electrical brain waves to see if they are still alive if the person is in a coma.
Energy can become blocked in several ways: 1) physically by injury 2) emotionally by upset, trauma, or fear 3) psychologically by traumatic events or decisions based on experiences. When this happens there is a disruption in the energy system and the energy becomes blocked. When this happens the result is usually pain or some other symptom be it physical or emotional.
With Acupressure you just lightly hold certain points on the body for awhile using your fingers like jumper cables on a battery. When you give the points extra energy it helps dissolve the block.
One of the simplest flows I use has also been one of the most beneficial for me. It opens up the flow of energy into the legs. Growing up I had achy legs very often and as a teenager every once in awhile my knee would "go out" and it would take a week or so for it to get back to normal. Once I routinely did this flow for a few months the leg meridians stayed unblocked and over the last thirty years I have had very few problems with my legs in this way.
This position will also help with headaches and sinus problems. My brother thought it was crazy until I got rid of a very nasty headache he had and the aspirin hadn't had time to work yet. A friend tried it for her sinuses and they started draining while she held her ankles. Sometimes it takes awhile to feel the effects so if you don't feel anything just keep at it.
Ankle Flow
There are indentations just behind the knobby bones on the side of your ankles/feet. Hold two fingers on each side in the indentation for 5 mintues or more at a time. If you do this morning and night you will feel a difference if not right away, the more you do it the more you will feel a change.
You may feel "pulses" at the points you hold. This is natural, it is an energy pulse not a blood pulse. But if you don't feel anything don't worry about it. It took me many months before I felt them but my work was still effective.
Another simple one is holding your fingers. All the energy meridians go to both the fingers and the toes. So while you watch TV, sit in a meeting or are listening in class just hold one finger at a time enclosing it with the other hand. Hold for 2-3 minutes and move on to the next finger. When you are done with one hand do the other. This will give you a general conditioning of all the energy meridians.
I have also found rubbing my fingers helpful for getting rid of my tension headaches.
